What’s the greatest value you bring to startups?

I’d say finding strategic allies that add enormous value, and especially in Japan. For instance, I helped connect one of our portfolio companies, an innovator in IC design for brushless DC motors (BLDC), with the largest company in the world in BLDC, which became a highly profitable collaboration for both. This is one of many examples. But I also excel at establishing strong corporate governance and management practices, and in developing new channel strategies.

To you, what’s the most important trait of a good VC?

First, being dependable. If you start something, see it through. Second is business acumen, which is the ability to sniff out opportunities and partnerships that can benefit all sides. And the third is people skills and negotiation skills, which go together. None of the strategic alliances I have helped to forge could’ve happened without these.
